Fruit Science Department

Department of Fruit Science

Department of Fruit Science at the College of Horticulture, Bermiok is renowned for its well-established and beautifully maintained experimental orchard, featuring a diverse array of fruit crops including Citrus, Banana, Avocado, Kiwifruit, Dragon fruit, Strawberry, Guava and papaya. At our college, we pride ourselves on our instructional fruit orchard, meticulously developed to include over 30 types of fruits. This diverse collection serves as a living classroom, allowing students to identify and study a wide variety of fruit species firsthand.

The unique climate of Bermiok Tokal in South Sikkim offers an ideal environment for cultivating low-chilling temperate fruits. Recognizing this advantage, department has established a dedicated temperate fruit block, successfully growing low-chilling varieties of apple, pear, persimmon, peach, and nectarine.
The Department of Fruit Science, under the broad discipline of Horticulture, offers courses aligned with the Fifth Deans’ Committee report. These courses are designed to fulfill the requirements for the 4-years B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Horticulture.
